This location is difficult to categorize because, like Ephesus, the once Greek city only became important during Roman times. The surviving ruins are from that Roman period starting in the 3rd century B.C. Yet their main temple is named for Zeus, not Jupiter.
Recent Discovery
Aizanoi’s latest claim to fame in the summer of 2023 is finding the heads of statues previously uncovered. In August 2021, archaeologists announced the discovery of a statue of Hygieia and in December 2021 that of Heracles. The heads are said to be Aphrodite and Dionysus; I don’t know when their bodies were uncovered.
Diocletion
Previously, Aizanoi was known as the first recorded place in the world where inflation was calculated and published for distribution to other cities of the Roman Empire. (Price Edict of Diocletion)
Phrygia
Other interesting points about Aizanoi is that it was part of the pre-Greek kingdom of Phrygia. The peoples often referred to but of which little is known. The impressive sculpture above depicts that period.
Acroterion
I found this photo personally interesting because of the acroterion, acroterium, or akroteria. Which is an architectural ornament placed at the top of buildings—and since used in furniture designs. The word comes from the Greek for summit or extremity combined with extreme or endmost. I saw them nearly everywhere in Greece then noticed them frequently in other countries as well. Yet it was not easy to find an explanation of their origin or symbolism.
