Getting there
From the map of Olympia Greece it’s easy to see that the site of the ancient games is quite a distance from Athens, and indeed from other main towns. The good news is that the town of Olympia, although geared for tourists, is a decent size and not too tacky. There are plenty of hotels and guest houses if you need to stay for a night or two.
Organised tours run three and four day trips to Olympia from Athens, which include some of the other ancient sites such as Epidavros and Mycenae. You can get details from your hotel or local tour operators. Beware of buying tickets from touts operating in the streets!
You can get a bus from Athens to Olympia, leaving from Terminal A (100 Kiffissou Street (Tel. 210 512-4910, 210 512-4911 or 210 513-2601). Terminal A is a few kilometers from the centre of Athens, and you can get there by taxi or local bus. The journey to Olympia takes about 5 hours 30 minutes and goes via Pyrgos where you have to change buses.
You can also go by train, but you have to change at Pyrgos as well.
Map
The map shows you where the site is in relation to Athens. You can use the controls to zoom in and out of the map, and you can move the map around by holding down your mouse button and moving the mouse around. The “Satellite” view is quite good, and if you zoom in on the site you can clearly see the main features. See our Olympia schematic site plan for details about each structure.
